The original leather and gold cover that inspired our Carmine journal was likely meant to become a part of French clergyman Michel de Marolles’ famed collection of engravings and prints. However, de Marolles died before this binding of L’Office de la Semaine Sainte was completed.
Inspired by the ornate 1688 binding of *L’Office de la Semaine Sainte*, created in Paris, France, the Equinoxe Carmine design celebrates the grandeur of French bookbinding. Its intricate gold-tooled “fanfare” decoration, featuring elegant tendril motifs, reflects a historic technique once reserved for books of great importance. The rich carmine colour echoes the warm red tones of the original antique leather, while the elaborate gilded detailing captures the craftsmanship of the era.
