Once prized among European nobility, velvet was considered a work of art and was produced in renowned weaving centres such as Florence, Venice and Genoa. The original fabric features an elegant seven-lobed shield outlined with teardrop shapes, richly decorated with an artichoke-like botanical motif and delicate floral patterns in brocaded gilt metal thread.
