After some early portraits of men, Viennese Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) strictly painted women, whom he wrapped in dazzling fabrics and set against theatrical backdrops. Exploring the decorative potential of the medium, he transformed his figures into plays of color and pattern. Here, in a work that Klimt completed in the last year of a passionate life, an ornate fan, lotus blossoms, and exotic birds recast an oil painting as an Oriental enamel.
